Fue Experience

I am going to use a hair surgeon’s personal experiences to show you the reality of FUE

Comment 1:
You might have to shave
the whole head for the FUE surgery.

Comment 2: 4700 FUs need about 47 sq. cm. donor size. It means there will have 47 sq. cm. scars forever without any hair at all. For FUT method usually we can cut 32 cm long and 1.5 cm wide to achieve the same amount of hair transplantation and leave only one 32 cm long by 0.1 cm wide scar. Instead of 4700 small scars all over your head.Which one do you like better?
Comment 3:Which one is more invasive? 4700 open wounds or one closed scar? Please see the Figure 10 A-2, Professor Unger studied 328 men aged 65 years or older and determined the safe donor area (safe zone). When you are 80 years old, 80% of the chance that your safe zone at occipital area is only 7 to 8 cm wide, at lateral and posterior area only 5 cm wide. You can see that about half of the grafts harvested are not in the “safe zone”. This means hair at that area are not permanent hair. When the surrounding hair loss or even get thinner, thousand of scars will appear and extremely difficult to cover up.
Comment 4:Scars size is usually much bigger than the original punch size. Reason #1: scalp has tension, the open wound will be pulled bigger.Reason #2: if the hair direction is 90 degrees to the skin, the scar will be exactly the same size as punches. But hair never grows vertical from the scalp, the smaller angle the bigger the scar.
Comment 5:We have being performed FUT for more than 20 years. The pain after the FUT surgery is depending on how tight, how deep and how to tie the knobs at both ends of the suture. It is technique dependent. We only give Tylenol for postoperative pain. No more than 2% of our patients ask for stronger medication. 30-40 % of our patients don’t even take any pain reliever.

The slides above were presented by Dr. Anastassakis at ISHRS annual meeting in Oct 2014.
Dr. Anastassakis is the author of the 1244 pages medical textbook, “Androgenetic Alopecia, from A to Z. “ If you would like to know more about him please click here.
If your main concern is the scar, then you should consider having our services at NHT Medical Center.
We know the trends and what people look for. So a lot of our time and effort is spent minimizing the donor scars. In the beginning, we adapted the surgery principle closure
without tension. Sometimes we may even use medication to loosen the scalp, apply the Trichophytic closure technique, and it improves the closure skill. We apply these techniques created by some of the most renowned scalp surgeons.

With Dr. Chang’s unique donor harvesting and suturing technique, the scars from FUT are nearly invisible.
