PRP for Hair Loss
Platelet Rich Plasma or PRP is a concentrated amount of platelets.
Platelets are component of blood and assist with function of clotting and recruiting growth factors (including platelet-derived growth factor, transforming growth factor, Vascular endothelial growth factor, insulin like growth factor, epidermal growth factor) which helps with tissue repair and promote regeneration.
PRP is used in variety of different medical applications from orthopedics to dentistry. In hair transplant, PRP is thought to use one’s own blood to recruit growth factors to heal damaged hair follicles and prevent hair loss. This form of treatment can be used on males or females.
To collect a PRP sample, we take the patient’s own blood and centrifuge it to help separate the the platelets from different components of the blood. The concentrated platelets are than transferred to syringe and injected the desired area of treatment. The process takes 30-60 minutes. Local anesthesia is offered as well if the patient is interested. The procedure is relatively safe due to using one’s own blood and side effects are rare.
We recommend three sessions, one to two months apart then 12 months intervals depending on the results.
PRP can also be used in conjunction with hair transplant surgery to help promote the healing of the donor and recipient site.
