Can you tell what’s the reason for this result?
It was harvested from too small of an area.
If you have very limited donor hair left, it will happen to you.
In Contrast, The photos below show an excellent example of a patient with a limited donor size done by FUT. The male patient only has a 5 cm wide donor size left. The safe zone is only 3 cm wide at the center.
I used FUT to harvest 1.2 cm wide, and 30 cm long for the donor skin. I could harvest the donor strip from the safe zone easily.
Comparing the before and after photos, you cannot see any difference in his donor area after the FUT procedure. Another two photos show his recipient site before and after the surgery. In the case of FUT, the scar width is only 1 to 2 mm, which is only 8 to 16% scar on donor skin, so the donor hair density exhibits very minimal change.
However, if FUE had been used in this case, 1.2 cm of punch scars would have existed among 3cm wide safe zones for the same amount of hair. It would mean 40% of the safe size would have had no hair and looked extremely thin and strange. The impact is especially noticeable in the donor area.
At the recipient site, FUT is able to harvest donors from the safe zone, so all the grafts will last for a lifetime.
3. Patients Who Have Diabetes
The scars for diabetic patients are hard to heal and easily infected.
Since there are so many open scars at the donor site, the site is easily infected.

5. Patients with Grey Hair
The color of the hair is the same as the scalp tissue. Therefore, It is difficult to see during the punch process. The photo shows black hair (dyed), but gray hair within the tissue, which cannot be dyed, is invisible.
A punch size bigger than 1mm is not recommended. (The scar would be too big.)
Microscopy is available for FUT surgery; it allows follicles to be seen more easily. Furthermore, the graft size can be cut bigger to reduce the chance of transaction, and the hair will not look pluggy.
6. Patients with Fade Haircuts
FUE needs to harvest hair from a large area in order to avoid the look of thinning hair at the donor site. A fade haircut requires shaving a large area of the hair, which will expose the bottom of a hundred scars related to FUE. In contrast, FUT can harvest hair at the higher part of the head. In this way, no matter how short the patient likes to shave their hair, the scars related to FUT will be almost undetectable. See VIDEO.
7. Patients Who Started To Lose Hair In Their Early Twenties
Early-age hair loss always indicates more hair loss in the future. FUE cannot use donors as effectively as FUT. Therefore, in the case of FUE, the risk of running out of donors is a much more significant issue. We all know permanent hair is limited and we need to use it wisely.
FUE provides little to no advantage to the following types of patients.
- Female Patients
Female patients almost never shave their hair entirely, so linear or punch scars do not matter. However, FUE has to shave a big area of the donor site, and it will take a year or longer to grow back the same length of hair at this site.
- Patients Who Had FUT Before
The main reason for FUE is to prevent linear scarring. If the patient has a linear scar already, additional punches from an FUE procedure will not make it disappear. Furthermore, don’t forget FUE cannot use donors as effectively as FUT.
