Spironolactone

What is Spironolactone?

Spironolactone, also known as Aldactone, is an oral medication that blocks the effects of Dihydrotestosterone (DHT). Spironolactone is a medication that is sometimes used to treat female hair loss. It is an androgen antagonist, which means that it blocks the effects of androgens, male hormones that are also present in women. Androgens play a role in the development of female pattern hair loss (FPHL), the most common type of hair loss in women.

How does it work?

Spironolactone works for female hair loss in two main ways:

  1. It reduces the production of androgens. Spironolactone does this by blocking an enzyme called 5-alpha reductase, which is responsible for converting testosterone into dihydrotestosterone (DHT), a more potent form of testosterone. DHT is thought to be the main culprit in FPHL.

  2. It blocks androgen receptors. Androgen receptors are proteins that allow androgens to bind to cells and exert their effects. Spironolactone blocks these receptors, preventing androgens from signaling to the hair follicles to shrink and produce thinner, shorter hair.

Studies have shown that spironolactone can be effective in treating FPHL. In one study, 100 women with FPHL were randomly assigned to take either spironolactone or a placebo for 12 months. The women taking spironolactone had significantly greater hair growth than the women taking the placebo.

Is it safe?

Spironolactone is a safe and effective treatment for FPHL for most women. However, it is important to note that it is a prescription medication and should only be taken under the supervision of a doctor. Spironolactone can cause side effects, such as breast tenderness, irregular menstrual periods, and low potassium levels.

As always, if you are considering using spironolactone for female hair loss, it is important to talk to your doctor about the risks and benefits. They can help you decide if spironolactone is right for you and can monitor you for side effects.

How does it compare to Finasteride?

Here is a table summarizing the differences between Spironolactone and Finasteride:

Side effects:  Breast tenderness, irregular menstrual periods, low potassium levels

Finasteride

Prescription-only
