Finasteride, also known as Propecia, is an oral medication that reduces the production of DHT. Finasteride is not approved for use in women and is forbidden in pregnant women. However, several studies suggest that finasteride at 1.25 mg or 2.5 mg per day may help women with hair loss.

Noncontrolled studies indicate that finasteride therapy can be effective in premenopausal and postmenopausal women. The finasteride-treated group showed a significantly greater reduction of hair shedding starting from the 6th month of treatment.
