FUE (Follicular Unit Extraction) is currently the most common type of hair transplantation.

• However, it is not without its drawbacks.
• While the “scar” with FUE surgery is diffuse and spread out over a much larger area, making it imperceptible under most circumstances, the downside is that if the scar is obvious (like in worst-case scenarios), it is far more visible and difficult to conceal than the linear scar typically seen with HIMS surgeries (usually easily concealed with tattooing in worst-case scenarios).
• The other downside to FUE surgery is that since the hair in the donor area is thinned out over a much larger area than with HUMS surgeries, if the optimal donor site is limited (in size or quality or both), what can be harvested by FUE is affected and potentially compromised.
• This also potentially prevents future FUE surgeries if the donor site is too thinned out.
• Thus, repeat surgeries tend to be more limited with FUE versus HUMS surgeries.
• Typically, with FUE surgery, a large area at the donor site needs to be shaved, which can be especially conspicuous for female patients with long hair. With HUMS surgery, only a tiny 2-3 cm wide strip of hair is shaved, easily concealed immediately after surgery and imperceptible.
